Promotional Art
Since 2010 I have been involved with the Eastwood Uniting Church Musical Society (EUCMS), both on- and off-stage. When they discovered I was an artist, they started requesting my work for posters, programs, banners, T-shirts, stage design, costuming, decor and more. It's a good partnership: they get great designs, and I get heaping helpings of praise for the ridiculously high number of hours I spend creating things for them.
THE MIKADO
Designed in 2012 for the Eastwood Uniting Church Musical Society production of The Mikado
The first show I ever designed for, this was an excellent experience with a director who had a clear vision for what he wanted in his promotional imagery. The T-shirt designs were left more up to me, while the Program cover was printed in gold as a special anniversary show.
NARNIA
Designed in 2013 for the Eastwood Uniting Church Musical Society production of Narnia
Another great experience. I was given a lot more freedom for these designs... which means that I inevitably made a lot more mistakes in the terms of compositional choices. Ah well, everyone loved it anyway. I created my own typeface for this one.
RUDDIGORE

The poster for this one started to suffer from a bit of 'design by committee.' As the design progressed, I was asked to add more elements to reflect different parts of the show. Finally, the design was deemed too serious for such a comedic production. I slapped some crossed eyes and a tagline on there to make it clear it was a comedy and dusted off my hands of the project. The T-shirt designs and postcard, however, are fantastic.
OLIVER

With very little time available to me at this point, I slapped something together as quickly as possible. While I love the colours, and layout, I hate Oliver's poorly proportioned body. Let me give you a tip: always use reference images!
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
Designed in 2014 for the Eastwood Uniting Church Musical Society production of Thoroughly Modern Millie
The design for this show came together so easily it was nigh-miraculous! As soon as the director explained the show to me I knew that the poster needed to be in a mix of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. That style dictated how everything would come together. The only problem: the amount of billing information was insane! At least we could dispense with that for the postcard, program and T-shirts!
GODSPELL
Designed in 2016 for the Eastwood Uniting Church Musical Society production of Godspell
'The tale of Jesus Christ as if he appeared for the first time in Central Station in Sydney' was how this was pitched to me. The director had a very rigid colour scheme planned for the show and wanted it reflected in the poster. The Sydney rail map creates a halo behind Jesus. The only nitpick I have is that they made me remove the cleavage from the woman in front. Too sexy, I was told. Harrumph.
ANNIE GET YOUR GUN
Designed in 2017 for the Eastwood Uniting Church Musical Society production of Annie Get Your Gun
"It's a sci-fi western and we want it to be kind of like a retro sci-fi book or movie" I was told, 'We're using the TV show Firefly as inspiration for the combination of sci-fi and western elements.'
'Can do!' I replied (want me to participate? Mention Firefly).
Twenty minutes later, the poster was mocked up and approved shortly after. The rest of the design aesthetic came from that very quickly.
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
Designed in 2017 for the Eastwood Uniting Church Musical Society production of Little Shop of Horrors
One of my favourite musicals! The director had a nice clear vision of the poster in her head and spent many hours trying to explain it to me in texts and verbally. Finally we sat down and I sketched while she talked. The poster layout was finalised in a few minutes after that. I added in the little cartoon characters as a bit of an homage to the Carry On movies. The copyright holders to the show requested they be allowed to use this poster as inspiration for other organisations leasing the show from them, because otherwise you always get the exact same poster for this show, using the exact same logo.
